Readers should be aware that there is quite a bit of sexually explicit language and scenes as the main character goes through his growing up process.
If you like western coming of age books that reflects the early days of river adventures, this is a pretty good book. If you are the type to be offended by plain descriptive language, might think twice about this one. I replaced my paper back book with a hard copy. I have read and reread these books of Terry Johnston many times as I have collected his books because I love the life that the mountain men lived.

Johnston paints an amazing picture of life in the first decades of the 19th century American expansion westward. It is a wonderful historical fiction. Titus Bass had grit but absolutely no moral character. I loved the history of the flatboats, the Natchez Trace and the period but this boy Titus Bass has been nothing but a stubborn fool which I reckon provides the right combination of determination, madness, piss and vinegar that will make the perfect mountain man.
This was a great yarn. Sometimes the mini-history-lesson interruptions in plot and dialogue were a bit long and therefore intrusive. Maybe it's because I'm not a history buff; history lovers would probably enjoy these digressions. Anyhow, I just glossed over those parts and got back to the plot, and everything worked out fine. This the second time I have read this book. As a woman, I am usually not drawn to western novels.
