  • Tracing women's lives, and Latina women's lives, can be a challenge in this period. These are groups that have not always been deemed worthy of documenting or archiving. Women would take on their husband's name and disappear into his story, and Velazquez married multiple times. She was also hiding her identity as a soldier and later as a spy. So she was deliberately covering her tracks. We have not located an obituary for her. We don't know where she was buried. We don't know who her descendants are, although recently I was contacted by Andrene Messer, a descendant of William Beard, her last husband.

Why did you feel you were the right person to tell this story? There have not been enough histories told about the role of Latinos in American history. Because of this, each new film made about Latinos in American history is expected to take on a greater burden to represent our entire past. But one film cannot do that. In addition, because so many of the contemporary stories about Latinos are negative, there is additional pressure to tell positive historical stories about unblemished heroes.

But I am interested in telling the complicated, nuanced stories that more closely describe our human condition. If we only tell stories of plaster saints, we have a pantheon of unattainable heroes, of inhuman mythological characters that we can never hope to really emulate. So the story of this flawed woman whose consciousness grows over time was really appealing to me.

I have spent a lifetime telling stories about race, politics, and class and this story called me. It was also a wonderful opportunity for me to collaborate with a long-time producing partner, Calvin Lindsay, Jr. That was a film about the fear of blackness and sexuality implicit in the censorship of black music and jazz. At that time, she married a Captain Thomas DeCaulp; he reportedly died soon after in a Chattanooga hospital. An officer of that name is known to have survived the war.

She then traveled north where officials hired her to search for herself. In Ohio and Indiana , she tried to organize a rebellion of Confederate prisoners of war. When he died in Caracas , she returned to the United States. During her subsequent travels around the U. She arrived in Omaha , almost penniless, but charmed General W.

Harney into giving her blankets and a revolver. Her book appeared in print in Some claim it is probably entirely fiction, others that the details in the text show a familiarity with the times that would be difficult to completely simulate. Shortly after its appearance, former Confederate General Jubal Early denounced the book as an obvious fiction. However, the overall truthfulness of her account remains indeterminate and highly questionable.

She became very active in public life and politics, and was particularly involved in grand speculative schemes around mining and railway building, as well as being involved in journalism and writing. Her biographer William C. Davis suggests that her actions were generally fraudulent, intending to raise money for herself and associates, although such schemes were typical business practices at that date.

Some press accounts were impressed by her vitality and business acumen, such as in an account from the New York Herald reprinted in the Saturday Evening Mail Terre Haute.

This contradicts official records that mention female soldiers as themselves or under male aliases, such as Sarah Rosetta Wakeman. Davis does, however, provide a definite date for her death as Loretta J.
