I love to listen his sermons or teaching series, love his books He explained Problem of Pain in Christian life very deeply. I understand that I ignored problem of death, but I like to talk about pain. Everybody will die anyway, but pain is bringing a lot of questions in our life, how God, who is Love, can tolerate pain in his creature their life is already so short?
This is the biggest question that atheists like to ask. She died of cancer at the age of For me these two books are absolutely different on question of pain. But still no real answer about pain. Even by name of this book you will understand that authors will show how fortunate we are because of pain. I believe that more full picture of Role of Pain in Christian life gave Dr.
His book is great and easy to read and understand. He even included Plato teaching in his book. Not so many Christian scholars do that. Seeing Plato as God prophet will open us to a much bigger God that embraces the whole world. God did show Himself not to believers only but also to unbelievers. Remember book of Isaiah chapter 45 about King Cyrus: Now verses from Plato Republic, book 2: We must, indeed, not allow him to seem good, for if he does he will have all the rewards and honors paid to the man who has a reputation for justice, and we shall not be able to tell whether his motive is love of justice or love of the rewards and honors.
No, we must strip him of everything except his justice, and our picture of him must be drawn in the opposite way to our picture of the unjust man; for our just man must have the worst of reputations even though he has done no wrong. I thing this book of Dr. Sproul will be very beneficial for Christian and also non believers as well. As someone who lives with suffering and chronic illness, this book is a balm. The Christian church, as a whole, is missing this message. For too many years Christianity has been sold and packaged as the answer to what ails us.

Accept Christ, they say, and life will be perfect. Christ is, indeed, the answer, but the question isn't who will remove me from this situation and make life rosy again, but rather who will walk though this fire with me. The Father is not our private genie in a bottle, waiting for us to snap our fingers and He'll make our lives perfect in an instant.
Rather, He will perfect US though our circumstances. If that means allowing illness or suffering into our lives in order to work our His perfect Will, then that's what He will do. Everyone, unless they are snatched from this world in an instant, will face hardship, injury, illness, suffering and eventually death.
It doesn't mean He has abandoned us, or forsaken us. He is waiting next to us, hand out and ready to carry us though. We are not alone. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. Originally published in , this version was released in The topic of suffering is frequently misunderstood and poorly explained in modern Christian instruction.
Suffering frequently comes up when discussing the attributes of God. Certainly there is a time to laugh, a time to dance, a time to celebrate-a time to have a party. But how much do we learn in those circumstances? Times of mirth do very little for the good of our souls. Every consequence of every sin of each one of His people was placed on Him. To carry this dreadful burden was His vocation.
To bear this pain and disease was His mission. The magnitude of this horror is beyond our understanding. But He understood it because it was His to bear. Jesus endured His suffering in order to redeem His people. Suffering will drive me to hopelessness. What character I have will disintegrate.
Surprised by Suffering: The Role of Pain and Death in the Christian Life
It is the hope of Christ that makes it possible for us to persevere in times of tribulation and distress. We have an anchor for our souls that rests in the One who has gone before us and conquered. Sometimes He calls us to suffer and die even if we want to claim the contrary. It was the Father's will. The cross was not Satan's idea. The passion of Christ was not the result of human contingency. It was not the accidental contrivance of Caiaphas, Herod, or Pilate. The cup was prepared, delivered, and administered by almighty God. He went to see his pastor, and in his bewildered anger he asked, "Where was God when my son died?
It is the hope of our future inheritance with Christ. This hope is no mere wish or idle longing of the soul. It is a hope that is rooted in the exceedingly great power of God. It is a hope that cannot fail. For those who embrace it, this hope will never bring shame or disappointment. The hope of eternal joy in the presence of Christ, a hope that sustains us in the midst of temporary suffering, is the legacy of Jesus Christ. It is the promise of God to all who put their trust in Him. The fact that God has a plan is indicative that He has a purpose.
Surprised by Suffering Quotes by R.C. Sproul
The fact that He is sovereign is indicative that He is fulfilling that purpose even when He allows suffering to come upon us. As in the case of Job, He may not reveal what His purpose is, but we have good reason to trust Him. We are children of the dust. Our bodies suffer from all the weaknesses and frailties that belong to the earth.
Our resurrected bodies will be tabernacles made in heaven. In the heavenly body, there will be no room for cancer or heart disease. The curse of the fall will be removed. We will be clothed after the image and likeness of the new Adam, the heavenly Man.

Yes, there will still be continuity. We will still be men and women. Our personal identities will remain intact. We will be recognizable as the people we were in this lifetime. But there will also be discontinuity as the shackles of the dust will be broken by the heavenly form.
