Or visit Mesa Verde National Park. Or go on to Durango if you want to take the train ride on day 5. We have a week or 8 days to stay in Colorado. Which is better place to stay Durango or Telluride or Outray? Forgot to answer, We were getting a realy good deal but didn't get it book in time because can't decide where to go yet. So I will look at the Grand Junction , and other places you mention. We both liked Durango and Ouray for our stays. Durango will be better for visiting Mesa Verde NP a day trip and you really should not miss this place.
Ouray has one of the loveliest locations in the south west. Also a must stop. Pagosa also should not be missed and also easier to do that from Durango. There's more than enough to see in a week in "" Little Switserland"" area. As for where to stay Telluride , Ouray , or Durango They all have a distinct character and each area is worth at least two nights. All three towns are connected with the mile San Juan Skyway so there is a practical driving route one of the most beautiful drives in all of the US.
Ouray is the smallest full time residents and dare I say least glamorous of the towns. It has incredible scenery however and some good restaurants. It has plenty to keep you busy for a few days.

Telluride to Cortez is about 2 hours. Telluride is actually two separate towns, Mountain Village newer and more modern on the hillside and Telluride Victorian Mining Town. I think the heart of Telluride is the old town. You can take the free gondola up and down, get out on top, visit the nature center They have festivals and events just about every weekend. It is lovely scenery and waterfalls like Ouray but is quite a bit larger although in either town, you can park your car and walk just about anywhere if you like.
Durango is really more like a city. There is the fun historic Main Street with many blocks of shops and restaurants but this area is large for SW Colo and so you definitely get a different feel. All hotels in Colorado Top questions about Colorado. What to do in Colorado? Or, as you're heading out I toward western Colorado , stop near Silverthorne or Frisco and choose one of many hiking trails in that region. Mid day at hanging lake could be a parking problem. The trail head fills and they turn people away.
If you get there very early or later in the day you may be ok There are many scenic hikes not far away with a fraction of the crowds. When people list national parks and a UNESCO world heritage alongside a 1-mile trail that begins at the exit ramp of an interstate, there's more than a parking problem. Just do the math. On a busy summer day there are over people on a trail that is barely feet long. That's no more of a nature hike than waiting in line on the stairs to get to the top of the statue of liberty. You missed a lot of important possible side trips along the way.
If heading up I thru first night Grand Junction maybe a next day morning couple hour side trip scenic drive thru Colorado National Monument. Montrose would be a good place to stay if wanting a motel on your second night.

Get out the map and look at all of the scenic possibilities along the way. Black Canyon is nice but unless heading down into the canyon I would only plan on a half day adventure there. Choose a hike near Ouray or Telluride instead, en route to Mesa Verde. You need to allow more time for Mesa Verde, as it takes some time just to reach the Mesa Top, plus more time to drive between the viewing sites and time to take one of the ranger guided tours.
What time do you arrive in Denver on the 13th? What time do you depart? And do you depart on the 17th or 18th?

Do you already have your plane tickets? Grand Junction , Montrose , or Durango or even Albuquerque would all be closer airports to save you some driving time getting to SW Colorado for a fairly short visit.
Might be more expensive but a rental car would probably be less and you'll save on gas. If you already have your flight, that's ok, it will be doable But no worries, it's all scenic. Arrive, rent car, drive toward Montrose. Choice of routes, depending on your arrival time, how far you want to drive after your flight, what you are interested in seeing or doing. Stargaze this evening if you wish.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Drive to Ouray or Telluride for the night. Hike this morning, then drive on to Mesa Verde Natl Park. Stop at visitor center, choose ranger tour ticket for tomorrow morning. Proceed to Mesa top and sightsee as time allows. Stay at Far View Lodge if possible to maximize your time. If not possible, stay at Mancos or Cortez. Drive back to Denver. I am actually travelling for work to Denver but my company is allowing me to take off some time after noon on the 13th.
Company hasnt booked my tickets yet but I am thinking evening or night on the 17th. I have work on the 18th. I am definitely skipping Hanging Lake as you guys suggested. My only worry would be that I may be exhausted by the time I reach these places. What do you guys think? Well, if that much driving sounds exhausting, then I think you'll need to skip Mesa Verde.
You can still include the Black Canyon and Colorado National Monument plus all the beautiful scenery along the way, plotting a shorter loop as previously described but leaving out Mesa Verde, making Ouray the furthest point of your loop. So you have from after noon on the 13th, then need to be somewhere fairly near Denver on the night of the 16th so that you have a reasonable drive to the airport on the 17th.
Are you wanting to fit in any particular activities other than some fairly short but scenic hikes?
