I felt myself wanting the sort of analysis and discussion that one finds in, for instance, Ann Rule. There was a lot of fact, but not a lot of journalism; in this sort of book, I expect the author to directly address the contentious parts of a case abuse allegations, for instance and provide insight into both sides of the case.
I expect more about how the Church of Christ may have enabled or informed the defendant's experience, or how she might have used outside perceptions to her advantage I don't need a clear "Yes, she was abused" but I do expect the difficult issues to be explored rather than glossed over. Clearly a lot of research went into this, but there's a difference between a survey of the facts and documents and a coherent narrative written for public entertainment. I think the author may have attempted to tell about the lives of those who are members of the church of Christ however there are still very erroneous statements and biblical interpretations.
She would have done well to have spent more than a Sunday afternoon of research time with a church of Christ preacher if she had intentions of accurately represent the beliefs of the church of Christ. Diane Fanning looks at the hidden lives and double persona's that the husband and wife both possibly had. They certainly gave the perception to their community of a more stable and loving relationship within the realms and rules of the Church of Christ. Unfortunately I'm still not "hooked" on Diane Fanning's writing style. This is the second book of hers that I've read and I've found the neither flowed very well.

The Pastor's Wife
Living this close to the town where this all took place made me curious to read this book. I followed the case when it was going on and so this book was a good way to review the actual thing. I really enjoyed the way the book was worded so that I could understand the legal terminology better. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning both sided of the story. The story is based on the real-life media sensation where Mary Winkler murdered her small-town preacher husband.
This film excels at conjuring the ambiguity in a troubling case. As the movie tells it, Mary Winkler shot her husband in the back after he would not help her out of a financial mess that he gotten her into. Mary had had about enough of a man who'd beaten and abused her sexually, but, as Selmer, Tenn.

Rose McGowan, though far more glamorous than the real-life mother of three at the heart of the story, does well as a timid woman who doesn't even believe she deserves a defense. Michael Shanks has a small role as her husband but is believable. Since Mary was the sole witness to so much of what she claims to have endured, we, her lawyer, her jury, and her community must base our judgments on her version alone. As the film tells it, Mary's oldest daughter, about 12 at the time of the killing, remains a voice of skepticism.
The scene in which she challenges her mother as to why they were not calling the police is powerful and really gets one thinking. The movie's final scene is a little chilling. Has Mary changed since serving a short term in jail and returning to everyday life in her quiet town? Or was she always that way? In all, this was very well done.
