Analyses of serial verb constructions often posit a close relationship between the surface-level integration of two verbs and the extent of their functional integration.

That is, a root-contiguous construction, as in 1 , would represent a closer functional relationship between the component verbs than a non-contiguous construction like 2 , where both verbs take affixes and arguments can intervene between them. Firstly, the paper will examine synchronic data to show that a single formal type of serial verb construction is used for a wide range of functional relationships, from aspectual distinctions and argument merger through to adjuncts and comments.

Secondly, it will look at the emergence of auxiliary verb constructions in the language to show how they have developed from non-contiguous serial verb constructions, and how this development in turn seems to be leading to further grammaticalization of subordination structures. In this talk, I discuss a series of recent developments in its historical linguistics, stemming from careful application of the comparative method. I start showing how internal reconstruction and comparative reconstruction within clear subgroups made it possible to clarify aspects of the phonological diversification of individual languages.

Besides, it promoted the identification of shared innovations in both the morphology and the lexicon, thus progressing beyond classifications based on geography, lexical retentions or 'phenetic' assessments of similarity. Another interesting outcome is the successful reconstruction, at intermediate proto-languages, of phonological contrasts whose existence at the Proto-Arawak level remains uncertain due to their haphazard distribution among daughter languages. Finally, I have identified lexical material lacking internal etymologies, but whose origins can be traced to contact with members of other language families, often informing us about the conditions under which contact took place.

Phonological elements whose distribution is confined to loan strata of the vocabulary were also found, even though these elements were later introduced in the inherited word stock as part of alternations resulting from secondary developments such as split-mergers. Semantic maps and the typology of colexification: Intertwining polysemous networks across languages. In Martine Vanhove ed. The Lexical Typology of Semantic Shift s. Using colexification patterns in reconstruction Abstract The reconstruction of kinship terminology in Berber presents a number of difficulties. Northern Berber kinship systems are profoundly influenced by Arabic at the level of lexicon as well as structure. Saharan ones paint a different picture, broadly reflecting an Iroquoian system rather than the Sudanese one characteristic of Arabic and Northern Berber; in this respect, they match several neighbouring languages of the Sahel. To determine the original situation, it is necessary to examine the history of colexification patterns. Colexification patterns shared across distantly related branches are likely to be original, while more localized ones are likely to be innovative.

Innovative lexicalizations, expressing meanings not originally independently lexicalized, tend to be formed through loanwords, transparent compounding, or metaphorical extensions from other domains. A further aid to reconstruction is the fact that particular family residence patterns promote particular colexicalization patterns.

Taking all of this data into account, it appears that proto-Berber kinship terminology reflected a bilateral Hawaiian system unlike any Berber group today, and that Tuareg kinship systems have been profoundly influenced by Sahelian ones just as Northern Berber ones have by Arab ones….

A new approach Abstract The innovation of distinctive binary possessive marking in Polynesian languages has long intrigued Pacific linguists. In these languages, possessed nouns are marked by a morpheme whose vowel is sometimes o, sometimes a. In early discussions, Biggs and Clark suggested that the opposition is one of dominance. Wilson, in , suggested that it is more related to agency and control of the possessor.

In this talk, I will review the existing and varied descriptions for the semantic nature of this distinction. I will then demonstrate the possessive distinction in several Polynesian languages and will offer an explanation and a new semantic reconstruction for it, based in the Polynesian interpretation of mana and the marked socio-political hierarchies that were developed by speakers of Proto-Polynesian. Barbara Johnstone et al. His research covers three language groups: Tai, Singpho and Tangsa. Stephen has transcribed and analysed a large corpus of text in these various languages.

In many cases the languages that Stephen is researching had never been recorded before he commenced his work. A huge number of recordings are now being archived to help preserve the linguistic diversity of the India-Burma border.

A particular area of Stephen's interest is traditional song, particularly ritual songs. In he is leading a project to examine the Tangsa Wihu Song. A current project is to study the traditional songs of Aboriginal people in Victoria, mostly written down as text only in manuscripts, but some of which were recorded on tape. These represent only a tiny portion of the incredible richness of the poetic and musical traditions of the Aboriginal people of Victoria.

Bisang calls for a typologically more informed approach and data from a larger set of languages in order to confidently identify cross-linguistically valid pathways of grammaticalization.

This study of grammaticalization in Mountain Ok, a family of Papuan languages of Papua New Guinea, consisting of Mian, Telefol, Tifal, Faiwol and Bimin, focusses on cases of grammaticalization in Mian Fedden and supplements this with data from the other Mountain Ok languages. I will present both familiar and unexpected grammaticalization processes. Among the well-known processes are the use of the verb 'give' as a valence- increasing device Newman , Reesink or the grammaticalization of verbs into tense or aspect meanings Foley , Lahiri On the other hand, the Mountain Ok languages display unexpected behaviour regarding the development of articles.

A very common source for articles is the demonstrative Greenberg , e. The Mountain Ok languages developed clitic articles from personal pronouns. These articles indicate the referential use of an NP. Compare 1a with the article and 1b without the article in a non-referential context here negation. In fact, the demonstratives form part of a series of pronouns which are all derived from the pronoun roots of the 3rd person.

To sum up, this is a contribution to a typologically informed approach to grammati- calization, which will enable us to develop a better understanding of genuinely universal grammaticalization pathways. Shifting Monastic Subjectivities in Tibetan Exile. Abstract Via a study of voices, this paper discusses how Buddhist ritual shapes, and is shaped by, historically contingent subjectivities. Imagination is a key ritual act, and linguistic elisions are crucial to ritual design, the elisions being of ritual actor and action, whereby ritual efficacy is designed to obtain.

Many monks in exile being relatively unschooled in the monastery's traditions, their imaginings of elisions, and the poetics thereof, often diverge from prescriptive imaginings. Furthermore, their imaginings involve modern exilic imaginaries, beyond the ritual's traditional horizon. Their imaginings, arising from subjectivities forged in exile, thus shape the ritual.

To discern how the ritual shapes monastic subjectivities, I offer a reading thereof through the lens of a Buddhist conceptual pair, the re valuations of which, in ritual and its related contexts, indicate the ritual's shaping of monastic subjectivities. For centuries, two types of objects are circulated in the Massim region, in complex partnerships between six language groups. Dobu is the lingual franca, and based on my long- standing relationship with Dobu islanders and participation in kula, I have acquired fluency in the genre of kula talk.

The delayed reciprocity of kula gift-giving requires sweet-talk rich in metaphors related to sex and hunting. I will show how these images are used to lure partners to part with their precious objects and share the principles of kula magic that I was privileged to learn. This endeavour requires countering popular discourses and practices which valorise politically and economically dominant languages and invisibilise all others.

The creation, negotiation, and possible social impacts of metaphoric arguments about endangered languages are examined though the case of Isthmus Zapotec, an Indigenous language spoken in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. Drawing on data from an ethnographic study of Isthmus Zapotec promotion initiatives, including observations, interviews, and documents, this paper presents the metaphors that are used by different social actors in this context.

We analyse the metaphors that are deployed and how they function in the creation of evaluative or argumentative discourse about Isthmus Zapotec. The ethnographic contextualization of the study allows for consideration of how metaphors and discourses circulate within and across sociolinguistic communities as well as how they are negotiated in specific interactions.

Paper read at the 6th anniversary commemoration of the establishment of the Institute of Linguistics, Academia Sinica, March 1, A Study of Saisiyat Morphology. Rukai is spoken across southern Taiwan and forms a small communalect among the Formosan languages, both in terms of population and diffusion of the language It includes only six dialects Tanan in the east Taitung County , Budai and Labuan in the south Pingtung County , Maga, Mantauran and Tona in the north Kaohsiung City but differs from other Formosan languages by its overall linguistic and cultural complexity: Internally, phonological variations are found in the various villages where Budai is spoken.

Externally, though belonging to the same language, the South-Eastern [Budai, Labuan and Tanan] and Northern dialects [Maga, Tona and Mantauran] are, to some extent, mutually unintelligible. This mutual unintelligibility seems to result not so much from language change in itself but from two factors: These two factors might be regarded as intertwined in which case ii might either be viewed as a consequence of i , but we might as well posit that it is the actual social organization of the Rukai that has produced such drastic linguistic variation.

Mutual unintelligibility among the Rukai dialects raise the question whether they should be treated as different dialects of the same language or whether they should be viewed as distinct but genetically closely related languages. Shelley argues, for instance, that they should not be regarded as belonging to the same language subgroup but should be viewed as a set of three distinct languages, i Tanan, Labuan and Budai, ii Maga and Tona and iii Mantauran.

In my opinion, however, there is no reason linguistically or culturally speaking why these six dialects should be regarded as belonging to different linguistic groups. All the dialects lack the focus system that generally characterizes the Formosan as well as the Philippine-type languages, where the morphological marking on the verb fulfill the grammatical coding of the subject.

It seems that no agreement can be reached so long as no relevant data is given for comparative purposes. The present talk represents the first attempt to achieve an extensive comparison of a Formosan linguistic group synchronically, in an attempt to reconstruct the morpho-syntax of the proto-language from which they are derived from, based on a new subgrouping hypothesis.

I will summarize the different views that have been proposed on both the external and internal relationships of Rukai, and discuss my own hypothesis regarding the position of Mantauran within this language family. My talk will end with a number of reconstructions. Pacific Linguistics -- Shelley, George. Wudai Rukai, the language, the context and its relationships. D dissertation, Hartford University. Recent quantitative analyses, however — of both traditional data and my own comparative fieldwork data — yield no basic binary split, and a more continuum-like picture instead. How did such radically different forms arise? From an ancestor with vowel length, or without? That, indeed, is precisely the stumbling-block: Lesser-known Quechua varieties in fact register a range of variant first person markings, intermediate between the prototypical ones.

And they are not inconveniences to downplay and explain away, but the key to solving the conundrum. As soon as one prioritises sound changes that are phonetically natural, rather than ones that align with preconceptions of a sharp split, a very different reconstruction of first person emerges, entailing also a revised phoneme inventory for Proto-Quechua. A new, dialect continuum model likewise rewrites the prehistory of Quechua expansion and divergence, and the correspondences with archaeology.
