There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. This book does an excellent job of outlining a flow of research, workshopping and documentation strategies for a web UX team. It's a great book for someone who has been handed a web design project and has no idea how to start. It goes into the precise steps for using specific software Omnigraffle, Powerpoint, Axure, etc. The authors clearly have a lot of experience and pepper the book with a pragmatic sensibility the emphasizes matching your process and documentation to your team and timeline.
However, if you have experience with user-centered design methodologies and creating your own flavors of the documentation, you will find a lot of this book repetitive and not useful since it does spend a large amount of its pages delving into how to make, for example, a clickable Powerpoint prototype. Also, this book only deals with the web. It's a bit shocking that a UX book published in doesn't broach mobile application design.
Many of the strategies are high level enough that they could be applied to an sort of practical UX design process for digital interfaces: However, the authors are clearly versed in the development of websites and stick to what they know. Overall, I think this book is great resource to get a very pragmatic, practical jumpstart in user-centered design for the web. It's clearly laid out and presents clear examples.
It gets three stars though, because an ideal book in this category would deal more directly with the increasingly multi-platform nature of UX design, beyond websites. I'm transitioning to a career in UX design and this book was invaluable. It was really nice to see what common deliverables actually look like as well as a detailed description of the elements in each deliverable and why they are important.
This is an excellent, thorough book and I definitely recommend it to people new to the field. It's actually a very basic book. Anyone with basic knowledge about UX will get no value from this book.

This book grabbed my attention with it's simple, straightforward approach to the not-so-well-known process of User Centered Design. The chapters are broken down in a clear and concise manner and beneficial examples are reference when needed. I would love to see a second edition showing the use of alternative applications, such as Adobe Illustrator, as this is my preferred tool of the trade. The authors examinewhy UX is gaining so much interest from web designers, graduates, and career changers and looks at the new UX tools and ideas thatcan help you do your job better.

Of course, everyone has their own methods and styles, so there's no "one fits all" solution fortunately! I have some years of experience dealing with different kinds and sizes of teams, clients or audiences.

Each case was a different scenario, and the methodologies and tools such as documentation in each of them was always different, adapted to the actual requirements. However, there are some underlying and recurrent needs and patterns, and this books does a good job covering most of them in a simple and elegant way.
As a downside, I found that each chapter included too many pages dedicated to "how to" use different tools to produce the aforementioned documents using different software such as Omnigraffle, Axure, Powerpoint I understand that for someone beginning his way into UX this could seem useful, but there are many and much better books and online resources on that. In my opinion, including this tutorials in the book made its valuable contents dilute, and I would have much preferred them not to be included. In summary, I think most of what is exposed in this book will be valuable both for beginners and experts alike.
It made me rethink some of the things I do at work, and I definitely plan to apply most of it in future projects. Oct 28, Jeb rated it really liked it. This is a very tactical book, something that many of these manual type books aren't strong in. Topics covered are things such as how to design a funnel diagram, what data should be in it, what it should look like, etc. Communicating the User Experience is an ideal resource for getting started with creating UX documentation.
