Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. A good cozy mystery, but I have problems with lead characters falling into pits of anxiety and depression. These are earlier mysteries by the author. Her most recent Shetland Island Mysteries are much much better. Another great one, hope, she never stops writing them I like the author. This is not one of her best but entertaining. I prefer vera Stanhope but this team is okay. Supposedly george and molly but molly has no function but to tag along and do nothing.
And george knows clues that he doesnt share until te very end. Really enjoy all her books but this one was particularly entertaining. See all 11 reviews. So, " 0 prequel " sorts by 0 under the label "prequel. Series was designed to cover groups of books generally understood as such see Wikipedia: Like many concepts in the book world, "series" is a somewhat fluid and contested notion. A good rule of thumb is that series have a conventional name and are intentional creations , on the part of the author or publisher.

Jan 18, Shannon Teper rated it liked it Shelves: This was a solid mystery in an unusual setting. I would have been swept up in the book a bit more if the author had been more consistent in her use of perspective. The book began by moving from one perspective to the next as the events preceding a murder came to their culmination. Then the reader was solidly connected to the police inspector for several chapters and beginning to sympathize with him, only to be redirected into an amateur investigator's mind for most of the second half of the book This was a solid mystery in an unusual setting.
Then the reader was solidly connected to the police inspector for several chapters and beginning to sympathize with him, only to be redirected into an amateur investigator's mind for most of the second half of the book as he set about making a fool the inspector you were beginning to like. I would have enjoyed the book more if told through fewer perspectives and through the eyes of characters you could get to know and care about more thoroughly. Still, it was a good plot with an atmospheric setting and a reasonably likable cast of suspects.
This is not a modern light and funny cozy, nor a modern British literary mystery like her later books, but more of an old fashioned golden age style mystery.

Dec 07, Michael Craig rated it really liked it. I have now read a few books by Anne Cleaves and I would rate this as one of her best. It had all the ingredients of a "who dunit" - a bird sanctuary island with all the members of the society staying together on the island where there was a murder.
The characters were well constructed with each having a motive. It kept me guessing to the end though on this occasion I guessed correctly - not because I was able to work it out properly but by analysing her previous books and recognising a pattern I have now read a few books by Anne Cleaves and I would rate this as one of her best. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

Couldn't bring myself to finish the book, which doesn't occur often at all. The characters were all very irritating, and even the murder victim himself was very lacklustre. I struggled on for a while until the dead body was finally discovered, when I had the epiphany that I could do something better with my time instead of finishing a book I wasn't interested in. I am being a bit harsh possibly.

It's early Cleeves, and although some of the mysteries are well drawn and the birdwatching background is fascinating, I found the two sleuths badly defined and some of the exposition confusing. This book was actually a 3. The mysteries are a little slow moving at this point, but I'm going to keep reading the series.
Dear old George Palmer and his bird watching friends. More murders than a group of crows. Not that I care anything about bird watching but I do enjoy watching Cleeves' characters. Feb 08, Rog Harrison rated it it was ok. I thought I had read this before but if I have I did not remember it. It's a whodunnit and although I did not guess the murderer it's not much of a read.
