The kodos are the racial mount of the tauren. Swifter and slightly smaller than their wild cousins, kodo mounts nevertheless demonstrate the same resilience and fearlessness found in their untamed brethren, traits that serve them well when bearing their equally resolute riders. As such, these criminal tauren were among the first to appear in the Eastern Kingdoms, and some even call Rustberg Village of Tol Barad home, becoming fishermen. A sole tauren was also a member of the infamous Defias Brotherhood.
The tauren remain stalwart allies of the Horde , even after Cairne's death. The Grimtotem tribe , is, in fact, the only tribe to have never formally joined the Horde. The Farwanderers tribe , who were not used to remaining static, disapproved of Garrosh's rule and Baine's passive obedience at the Warchief's every command, and so considered leaving Mulgore. However, they were eventually convinced to remain in Mulgore, and the Horde, after Baine dealt with the quilboar problem.
Following the destruction of Camp Taurajo , a group of tauren were unsatisfied with Baine's rule, and so the High Chieftain banished them from Thunder Bluff but did not take further action. Despite this, the tauren tribes retain respect for their High Chieftain. When Sylvanas Windrunner sent out emissaries to various factions in order to protect her budding nation, the Forsaken , the kind-hearted tauren of Thunder Bluff proved to be the most promising contact.
Specifically, Archdruid Hamuul Runetotem saw the potential for redemption in Sylvanas' people, even though he was fully aware of the Forsaken's sinister nature. Thus, the tauren convinced Warchief Thrall , despite his misgivings, to forge an alliance of convenience between the Forsaken and the Horde.
She pointed out that the Forsaken know much of disease, and claimed that by aiding one another, the trust between the two peoples would be strengthened. The tauren are not as hostile to the Alliance as some of the other races that comprise the Horde. Tauren have poor relations with the dwarves of Ironforge , as the dwarves' constant digging in the earth has caused them to come into conflict with the tauren.
The tauren see their digging as scarring the Earth Mother , and that the dwarves are hollowing and defiling the land. Of all the Alliance races, the night elves are the ones with the best relations to the tauren, due to their shared druidic tradition and connection to nature. The preservation of Azeroth is a common goal that the two races both share. However, despite the bond between the two races, there are some tauren who believe that the night elves' pride still limits their sight. The Grimtotem tribe , after being driven from Mulgore , briefly allied with the Alliance in the Stonetalon Mountains ,  but the pact was broken shortly afterwards. The Grimtotem tribe stand as an aggressive extreme of the usually pacifistic tauren, wishing to eradicate the "lesser races" from Kalimdor and to retake the tauren's long lost ancestral holdings.
After the battle for Thunder Bluff and the exile of the treacherous Grimtotem, they sought to ruin Mulgore itself as they were driven out, sending a force led by Orno Grimtotem through the Stonetalon Pass and poisoning several sacred tauren water wells throughout Mulgore. Tauren and centaur tribes have long feuded with each other over the lands that the two nomadic races shared.
The centaur are known for their brutality and savagery, but support from the Horde has turned the conflict in the tauren's favor, allowing them not only to survive but also to prosper. Despite this, friendship between a tauren and a centaur can be made as seen with Ironhoof and Dorthar. The vicious, boar-like quilboar have long clashed with both the centaur and the tauren over land and food. While some tauren were able to forgive being driven from their ancestral lands, others, such as Auld Stonespire , were not and considered the quilboar's actions to be a sin worthy of the most severe revenge.
The Bristleback tribe have long been at war with the tauren of Red Cloud Mesa , ambushing hunting parties and stealing from the village by dark. Due to a drought that struck Central Kalimdor shortly after the Shattering, a group of quilboar began raiding Horde caravans and water shipments. Though Warchief Garrosh and his Kor'kron tried to put an end to the quilboar with force, it was Baine and Hamuul who resolved the conflict by creating a new river for the quilboar to take their water from.
Although centaur, tauren, and quilboar all hate each other, the three races come together to do trade at Flayers' Point in Desolace. But there is no love lost between them, and brawls erupt like clockwork every five minutes, earning the trading post the nickname "Slayers' Point". Harpies have clashed with the tauren on several occasions.
During the Third War , a group of harpies from the Stonetalon Mountains started poaching the tauren's precious kodo herds, slaughtering them mercilessly and leaving the beasts to rot in the sun. Thunder Bluff , Cenarion Circle. Or the other races, sure. Each race in World of Warcraft has its own resistances, enhanced stats and some sort of special ability. There are two main concerns involved in choosing a race as a new player. Gnomes are adorable and cuddly and they make fun noises.
But for some reason Blizzard has denied them the ability to be Druids, Paladins or Shamans. Otherwise, pick what you like. If you want to dance on mailboxes in your underwear, go for night elf. If you want to smell really bad, undead is a choice you can make. This is your chance to be anything you want to be. In fact, part of the fun of starting fresh is going through the various character classes and seeing what sticks.
There was a time, year ago, when some classes were more friendly for new players than other, but Blizzard has simplified the leveling process so much that any available class is viable. At level 10, players choose one of three specializations specs , ability paths that help define how their chosen class plays. For some classes Mage, Rogue, Warlock, Hunter the different specs are simply different ways to perform the same role. Take my level 10 Paladin, whom I will never play because of my irrational hatred of blood elves. He has a choice between being a Holy healer, a Protection tank or a Retribution damage dealer.
Or he can sit there and rot, because blood elves are the worst. Fiddle with their specs. See what you like. Or just play them all. Fourteen years of people selecting names does not leave a lot of options open, but keep trying. Crunchy was taken, but my plan to do a rotating animated GIF of rejected names was thwarted when my second choice turned out to be available.
Over the years, the leveling experience in World of Warcraft has evolved to the point where all you really have to do is follow the quests. No matter which character class or race you choose, when you log into the starting area you get a brief cinematic, followed by your first quest. There are always quests. Thanks to the recently introduced zone scaling feature, these quests are always tailored to your characters level. My level 25 Warrior in the image above has four different zones she can quest through.
Pick one and make a note of the others for the next character you level up. The only old world zones untouched by Cataclysm were the starting areas for the blood elves and draenei. If you roll either of those races, get out of the starting zone as fast as you can. The leveling process in World of Warcraft can be pretty lonely these days. The days when every low-level zone was filled with players chatting about disgusting things and making Chuck Norris jokes are long gone no matter how hard I try to bring them back.
This is a massively multiplayer role-playing game, after all. You just need to find them. When general chat channels are available, use them, preferably maturely and respectfully. Most of the time the response is dead silence, but every now and then people will start talking. The best way to make friends in World of Warcraft is to join a guild. Oftentimes new characters will start getting random guild invites the moment they log into the game from officers desperate to pad their ranks.
If their pitch is good, give them a chance. Better yet, remember those server forums I talked about earlier? Go there and search for guilds looking for new members. But if you want to get the most out of the game, some reading, or at least extended watching, is highly recommended. No really, the first volume deals with the birth of the cosmos and the powerful forces that shaped the game world.
